Secretary General Visits Bhutan


At the invitation of the Royal Government of Bhutan, Secretary General (SG) undertook an official visit to Bhutan from 05-09 June, 2025. The primary purpose of the visit was to gain deeper insights into the Gelephu Mindfulness City(GMC) project and explore potential areas for collaboration between GMC and BIMSTEC.  During the visit, SG toured GMC project sites  and engaged in bilateral meetings with Ministers and Senior Officials of the Royal Government of Bhutan.

 

SG called-on Dasho Dr. Lotey Tshering, Honourable Governor of GMC and discussed avenues for contribution of BIMSTEC in GMC. During his call-on H.E. Lyonpo Tshering, Honourable Home Minister of Bhutan,  SG discussed Bhutan’s vital role in strengthening cooperation under BIMSTEC in security, culture and disaster management sectors.

 

SG also called-on H.E. Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel, Honourable   Foreign Minister of Bhutan in Thimphu, who reaffirmed Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to the BIMSTEC process and underlined its critical role  in deepening regional cooperation under BIMSTEC. He also hosted a dinner for SG.


SG met with Mr. Rabsel Dorji, Chief Communication Officer of GMC, who briefed him on GMC’s vision and its regional significance. They explored potential avenues for collaboration between BIMSTEC and GMC.

 

SG held an informal discussion with H.E. Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Honourable Prime Minister & H.E. Lyonpo D.N. Dhungyel Hon’ble Foreign Minister of Bhutan regarding Bhutan's vital role in expanding regional cooperation under BIMSTEC at the dinner hosted by India’s Ambassador to Bhutan at his residence.

 

SG delivered a talk on “Promoting Regional Cooperation through BIMSTEC” at Royal Thimphu College in Bhutan. Addressing over 90 students and faculty members, SG highlighted BIMSTEC’s mandate vision and achievements in forging regional cooperation in security and development.
